The project objective

The European ODISSEE project aims to prepare future scientific infrastructures for the exabyte era by developing more efficient, flexible and energy-efficient solutions to process the massive volumes of data generated by cutting-edge instruments such as the SKAO in radio astronomy and LHCb at CERN.

By bringing together leading organisations in research, high-performance computing, the European technology industry and digital infrastructures, ODISSEE explores new hardware architectures, advanced data processing and compression methods, and hardware-software co-design approaches.

The project also includes a pilot focused on dark matter. This use case aims to leverage these technologies to analyse vast astrophysical and cosmological datasets, helping to better characterise dark matter and search for clues about its nature.

The project therefore addresses a dual challenge: enabling new scientific discoveries at unprecedented scale while reducing the energy footprint of intensive computing, contributing to more powerful, sustainable and technologically sovereign European research.
